Effective Pest Control Strategies
1. Regular Inspections and Monitoring
At Lake Godstone, we walk the cabins, campsites, boat docks, and trails every week. We look for signs of pests like bed bugs, cockroaches, rodents, and ants. A small check today can stop a big problem tomorrow; but our preventative program is the key to our success in keeping out the thousands of bugs that live just inches away from our facilities.
Our room heaters (see photo above) are placed in each room for two days or more on a regular basis and they heat the rooms to over 130 degrees to eliminate even the toughest of insects. But we do even more with the help of our professional pest control subcontractor.
-
🕵️♂️ Regular Inspections: Check inside cabins, lodge rooms, and outdoor areas to spot insects or rodent droppings
-
📊 Monitoring Systems: Use smart traps, moisture sensors, and insect traps to detect pests early
-
🚨 Rapid Response: Act fast with eco-friendly baits or professional help when we find wasps, bees, or rodents.
-
2. Seal Entry Points
Pests can slip through tiny cracks and crevices. A mouse can fit through a hole the size of a dime. At our lodge and cabins, we seal gaps around doors, windows, and pipes.
We use caulk and weather stripping to block entry points. We cover vents with screened vents to keep out wasps, bees, mosquitoes, and spiders. We use steel wool plugs for rodent holes. These steps are a big part of our integrated pest management (IPM).
-
🚪 Caulk: Fill gaps around door frames, window sills, and foundation cracks with high-quality caulk
-
🪟 Weather Stripping: Add weather stripping to doors and windows to seal gaps and reduce energy loss
-
🏠 Screened Vents: Cover air vents and dryer vents with screens to block flying pests
-
🧱 Exclusion: Use steel wool or mesh to plug pipes and crawl space openings to stop rodents
3. Maintain Cleanliness and Sanitation
A clean space is less attractive to pests. Our housekeeping team cleans and sanitizes each cabin after every guest departure. We wipe counters, sweep floors, and wash linens in hot water at 140 degrees.
We vacuum rugs and upholstery and use insect traps in hidden corners to catch roaches or spiders.
Bugs can smell a picnic oppoertunity a mile away so we ask our guests to store all food in sealed containers and to not leave any food out on countertops overnight. We also ask that boxes and storage containers from grocery stores are left outside or disposed of in our entry gate dumpster immediately upon arrival as these often contain pest eggs. Any food left outside will generally create an overnight invitation to our racoon population as well as every ant in the neighborhood.
-
🗑️ Sealed Trash Bins: Use bins with tight lids and dump them often at our entry gate dumpster to avoid flies and rodents
-
🥫 Food Storage: Offer sealed containers and label them to keep ants, cockroaches, and rodents away
-
🧹 Regular Cleaning: Sweep floors, wipe down counters, and launder linens at high heat
4. Eco-Friendly Prevention Methods
We care about both our guests and the environment. We choose eco-friendly methods with non-toxic solutions. Our integrated pest management plan blends traps, baits, and natural repellents such as peppermint spray on our porches and docks which our pest control contractor does on a regular basis.
We use EPA-approved products that are safe for families and pets. Our plan follows the IPM cycle: monitor, identify, prevent, control, and evaluate. We adjust our methods based on guest feedback and data logs.
When we spot a weak area, we apply diatomaceous earth in cracks to target insects without harming wildlife.

6. Seasonal Treatments and Off-Season Maintenance
Bugs change with the seasons. In spring, we treat for ants and cockroaches. Summer brings extra heat and more spiders near our porches and docks.
Fall can push spiders and rodents indoors, so we step up rodent baiting and seal entry points. Winter is our chance for off-season maintenance. We seal cracks, clean vents, and set up monitoring systems in empty cabins.
Our landscaping team also trims plants weekly. They clear dead leaves and wood near facilities to cut fuel for rodents and insects. We keep sports fields mowed low to reduce tick habitats. Seasonal treatments are part of our ongoing prevention strategy.
-
🌸 Spring Treatments: Focus on ant baiting.
-
🍂 Fall Sealing: Replace weather stripping and trap early rodent activity
-
❄️ Off-Season Maintenance: Deep clean, check moisture sensors, and refresh exclusion measures
